Green Day Concert

So Kara, Sully, Lanti and I drove up to Portland and back for the Green Day concert last night. And holy hell that was an awesome way to open up the new school year.

At first we encountered our own share of difficulties on the way up. For one thing, Kara, who was driving, only had the vaguest idea of where the Portland Memorial Colieseum was. And it sure didn't help that no one had thought to Mapquest the directions.

Some confusion and three hours later, we found ourselves all the way the fuck up in Washington, over the state line. That's when we realized that we had to turn back. We finally found the damn place at about 8pm. An hour after the concert was supposed to have begun.

But it turned out okay. For one thing, concerts never really stat exactly on time. Jimmy Eat World was opening for Green Day. So by the time we got there, they'd just finished. Which was fine by me since I'd already seen Jimmy Eat World last year, but not so fine by Lanti because she'd been counting on getting there in time to watch them.

Anyway we spent a half hour trying to find seats. And that wasn't easy because of how packed it was by the time we got there. So we ended up way the fuck up towards the top right side of the stage, practically almost behind the stage. Not exactly prime seating.

Still, once the concert got going, it didn't matter. Those guys were awesome! Apparently they've been around for 17 years now, and they were still jumping around as if they were 18! Fantastic. An incredibly high-energy show with ridiculously elaborate pyrotechnics.

They did mostly songs from their American Idiot album, but threw in some old ones for good measure. Minority, Time of Your Life, Wake me up when September Ends, and a couple others. They came back for encores twice and finally ended the show with their own rendition of "We Are the Champions," during which all the lights were turned off and the audience started waving little lighter flames and glowing cell phone displays about. The entire audience section of the colieseum was completely dotted with little blue and yellow lights.

Absolutely fucking beautiful. And that was without a doubt, the best concert I've ever been to.
