Baptizing an Apartment

We all gathered at Crystal's tonight for our weekly L Word session. The only thing different was that the location of 'Crystal's' had changed. She's no longer at 22nd and Emerald. Now, she's way the fuck out in West Eugene on 12th and Jefferson in her new apartment.

Crystal had this moving in ceremony planned. Because she has foster parents in Fiji, she's very in tune with Fijian traditions. The ceremony she performed tonight was a welcoming ceremony. She took this dried root-- in powder form-- poured it into an oversized tea bag and immersed the bag in a bowl of water.

Then she made a really nice little speech about how grateful she was for her new place, for her friends, and especially the people who helped her move—essentially me, Alec, Jenn and Angela. She even looked as if she was tearing up! Crystal's emotional like that. It's pretty cute. Really.

Finally she went round the circle and made each of us drink a bowl of the strange root concoction. First you clap once, then you drink, then you clap three times. That's the way it went. I downed the little bowl of liquid. It didn't taste bad. Kinda like brackish water.

The bowl went round the group and the ceremony was over... or so we thought. Crystal suddenly jumped up saying she'd forgotten the part of the ceremony that was the most fun. She went to the bathroom, got a bottle of talcum powder and before I knew it, she dumped powder on my head and was smoothing it onto both sides of my face!

She proceeded to do this to everyone, till she got to Angela—who apparently hates the smell of baby powder. They had a mini battle and Crystal doused Angela, who promptly grabbed the bottle and doused Crystal in return. Funny sight. A group of ten girls with dusty white hair and faces gathered around the glow of a TV.
